Florida Highwaymen
The Highwaymen were a group of African-American landscape painters who were inspired and mentored by A.E. Backus. While only Alfred Hair was technically a student, Backus' influence extended to the twenty-six (give or take a few) artists who have been given the moniker "The Highwaymen".
This group of entrepreneurial painters includes: Alfred Hair, Harold Newton, Sam Newton, Lemuel Newton, Curtis Arnett, Hezekiah Baker, Al Black, Ellis Buckner, George Buckner, Robert Butler, Mary Ann Carroll ( the groups only woman), Johnny Daniels, Willie Daniels, Rodney Demps, James Gibson, Isaac Knight, Robert Lewis, John Maynor, Roy McLendon, Alfonso "Pancho" Moran, Willie Regan, Livingston Roberts, Carnell Smith, Charles Walker, Sylvester Wells and Charles "Chico" Wheeler.

Smith, Julie Enders, Annie Nobles Miller, Jackie Schindehette and Jackie Brice. We also handle the work of the Highwaymen whose work is exhibited in a separate section of this website.
