Florida Highwaymen

The Highwaymen were a group of African-American landscape painters who were inspired and mentored by A.E. Backus. While only Alfred Hair was technically a student, Backus' influence extended to the twenty-six (give or take a few) artists who have been given the moniker "The Highwaymen".

This group of entrepreneurial painters includes: Alfred Hair, Harold Newton, Sam Newton, Lemuel Newton, Curtis Arnett, Hezekiah Baker, Al Black, Ellis Buckner, George Buckner, Robert Butler, Mary Ann Carroll ( the groups only woman), Johnny Daniels, Willie Daniels, Rodney Demps, James Gibson, Isaac Knight, Robert Lewis, John Maynor, Roy McLendon, Alfonso "Pancho" Moran, Willie Regan, Livingston Roberts, Carnell Smith, Charles Walker, Sylvester Wells and Charles "Chico" Wheeler.

Indian River School Artists

The Indian River School painters were students or close artistic compatriots of Backus. Highly regarded for the skill and quality of their artwork, their beautiful paintings, primarily of Florida landscapes, have continued to increase in value.

The Indian River School painters whose work is handled within the museum's consignment program include: Don D. Brown, James Hutchinson, Therese Knowles, Margaret Z. Smith, Julie Enders, Annie Nobles Miller, Jackie Schindehette and Jackie Brice. We also handle the work of the Highwaymen whose work is exhibited in a separate section of this website.
