A.E. Backus Sketches
A series of eighteen reproductions of original A.E. Backus sketches were released as a portfolio titled “Florida and the West Indies, Sketches by A.E. Backus” (examples of 4 below). 1,000 limited edition portfolios were printed. Over the years, the portfolios were broken up and individual reproductions regularly surface.
The quality of the portfolio was excellent. Many naturally assume that the prints are original sketches. Sadly, they are not. Before contacting the Museum about your Backus sketch, please take a moment to peruse the prints to see if yours is one from the portfolio. If it is, it is of modest value. Frame it and enjoy it. If it isn’t part of the portfolio, then you may assume it is an original and has some significant value. A complete portfolio with all 18 images, the cover and biographical insert is also of significant value. Recent sales of complete portfolios have been in the $800 - $1,000 range, depending upon condition.
